IN THIS ISSUE

“It is not important how we come to the events in our lives, but how we deal with those events”- Troy

Feel free to forward this issue to friends, family and associates!

This week’s article: Time is our most valuable commodity…

Time is our most valuable commodity, bar none. Time is the most valuable thing we own, but it is the thing we are most often wasteful with. We cannot regenerate it, rejuvenate it or re-invent it- once it’s gone it’s gone, and I became amazed what could be accomplished in short spans of time and over longer spans of time both now and during my incarceration when I had set goals and agendas before me.

I am not saying we cannot or should not have time laying in front of the television, strolling through the mall, etc.- it is about balance in our lives, but at the same time we need to have some type of time management tool in place that assures us that we are using our time as effectively as we can. For me personally, I have short and long-term goals associated with every aspect of my life- relationships, business, health and fitness, material wants, etc. And just by habit, several times each day I ask myself, ‘Troy, is what you are doing right now getting you and closer to those goals’? And if the answer is no, then I change what I’m doing, it’s that simple.

I have heard colleagues tell audiences members to write their goals down on a piece of paper and put them away in a drawer. Then, thirty days later pull them out and see if they are any closer to obtaining them. Well I say that if your goals are laying in some drawer, then you are not living them or actively pursuing them. Mine are embossed, emblazed in my mind- I am going after them each and every day.

And just to help drive home this point, the importance of time, I want to share with you some different perspectives, scenarios you may have never considered surrounding the importance of time. I read this on the bulletin board in the lunchroom of a California company I once spoke at- what it said on that little white piece of paper was this:

  • To realize the value of one year, ask the student who has failed a final exam.
  • To realize the value of one month, as the mother who has given birth to a premature baby.
  • To realize the value of one week, ask the editor of a weekly paper.
  • To realize the value of one day, ask the daily wage laborer with ten kids to feed.
  • To realize the value of one hour, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet.
  • To realize the value of one minute, ask the person who has missed the bus, the plane or the train.
  • To realize the value of one second, ask the person who has survived an accident.
  • And to realize the value of one millisecond, ask the person who won a silver medal at the Olympics.

Time is our most valuable commodity; look at how you are using it.

SOME INSIGHT FOR EDUCATORS:

It is my personal belief that educators (whether that be teachers, administrators or anyone associated with educating our young people), those who teach our children, who shape our future, who mold tomorrow’s leaders are working within the most noble of all professions. They are overworked, underpaid and oftentimes unappreciated. I have heard others say it and I agree- they should trade salaries with actors, actresses and athletes. They our working with our countries most precious resource- our children, and it is about time they are rewarded handsomely for their efforts. Our future is placed in their hands and they are often asked to be surrogate parents and counselors in addition to their primary task of teaching.

In a time of budget cutting, tightening of the strings and watching every penny, let’s not forget the importance of what they are doing.

For those of you who work in this most noble of all professions, I want you to know that I, as well as the majority of the people in this country know what a fantastic job you are doing and we wish to tip our hats to you. Keep doing what you are doing- you are making a difference!

(Please note that my opinions in this section are just that- my opinions. Feel free to disagree with them, argue them or dismiss them. As a professional speaker and author, I find that from time to time I offend or upset people. To this I say that I better be offending some people, otherwise I am not doing my job. By making people look at things they are not always comfortable looking at, I expect to ruffle some feathers and welcome your feedback at any time)
