Troy's Times - August, 1st 2004
Hi Friend! IN THIS ISSUE
“It is not important how we come to the events in our lives, but how we deal with those events”- Troy
This week’s article: Faith… And I am not necessarily talking religion here- if you are a religious person that is fine. I am talking about faith in something other than yourself, faith that you are not alone, faith that things happen for a reason. There was a reason I went to prison- otherwise I would be dead. I am one of the few people who can make the statement that the absolute worst thing that ever happened to me- going to federal prison was at the same time the very best thing that ever happened to me, it literally saved my life. For those of you who have heard me speak you know that there was a reason those jingle of keys came down the corridor when they did- there were bigger things in store for me. There was a reason I got those scholarships- I was busting my behind. Faith that things happen for a reason- both good things and bad things. We are all masters at taking the good things that come into our lives- the promotions, the accolades, the bonuses- and seeing how we can become better people and grow from these things. But where we often struggle is with the bad things that come into our lives. The tragedies, the things that knock us down- it is in these areas that we struggle to see how they can make us better people and how we can grow from them. I speak on this issue all the time and was reminded of it within my own life how true this is in January of 2001. Faith that things happen for a reason. My first indication that something was wrong was when I put the key into the lock of the front door at my house. As I swung open the door I discovered that the entire contents of my hallway closet was spread along the carpet. Going from room to room I discovered that the whole house was in this state...every drawer had been pulled out and overturned and the place was a complete mess. On that day that my wife and I were burglarized, we lost ever single thing we owned of value and I mean everything...TV, VCR, computers, stereo, jewelry that had been handed down to my wife for generations- things that could never be replaced. Was I mad, yes I was very mad. Did I want to get my hands on the people who had done this to me, you better believe I did. A couple of days later as I was sitting in my office filling out the insurance forms when I got to thinking to myself, why did this happen to me? And it slowly became clear that I had never been on that end. I had always been the thief, the taker. I never knew what it felt like to be the victim, to be taken from, to feel vulnerable. And it slowly started to come to me...maybe I need to feel that. Maybe that was the final nail in the coffin of the old Troy Evans being buried and put away forever without the possibility of him ever returning to his former self. Faith that things happen within our lives for a reason...both the good and the bad. The day "Good Morning America" came calling As a professional speaker and author, receiving national exposure is about as good as it gets. Two weeks ago (6-30-04) I received a call from a producer of Good Morning America inquiring as to what I had going the next morning. I told her that I had a golf outing planned. She asked if I would rather be interviewed live by Diane Sawyer…. I quickly replied that I would love to unless it involved me be raked over the coals…she assured me that this was not the case and went on to explain that with the recent escalation in bank robberies across the country that they were looking for an expert to answer some questions as to why this was happening. Me an expert being interviewed by Diane Sawyer! They arranged for a limo to pick me up at 3:00 am the following morning and off to the ABC affiliate in Phoenix we went. Nervous yes, but I also knew this could be the biggest career boost that has ever come my way. After fifteen minutes of make up and testing the red light on the camera came on and off I went via satellite. It went over very well and the following days my phone was ringing off the hook and my email was going crazy. Almost five years to the date of my release- this one time bank robber was being exposed to millions and millions of people. Here is to success when you least expect it, and it just falls into something I have chosen to believe for the last twelve years… If you are doing the right things, treating others as you would want them to treat you, are fair in your dealings with others and are committed to working hard, I can assure you of one thing: Magical things will happen in your life as well. (Please note that my opinions in this section are just that- my opinions. Feel free to disagree with them, argue them or dismiss them. As a professional speaker and author, I find that from time to time I offend or upset people. To this I say that I better be offending some people, otherwise I am not doing my job. By making people look at things they are not always comfortable looking at, I expect to ruffle some feathers and welcome your feedback at any time) Featured product for this issue!
